Client-side, QA is easy. You append a query parameter, Target reads it, and you drop into the experience you want to preview. Server-side is where people hit a wall. The delivery API call does not carry the URL the way a client-side page render does, so the usual QA links and audience refinements have nothing to grab onto. You can try to force the right values into the server-side request, but now you are asking your engineers to pass QA context through in the exact format Target expects, and that turns a five minute preview into a project.

There is a much easier way, and it does not require touching the server-side implementation at all.

Reframe what a profile script is for

Most of us think of profile scripts as compute on data we already have. Read something off the profile or the incoming request, derive a value, store it. That is the common use, but it undersells what these things actually do.

A profile script is a capture mechanism. It runs on every Target call, and it can write a value into the visitor profile that then persists and travels with that visitor everywhere Target delivers. Client-side, server-side, email, wherever the identity resolves. Once you see it that way, you can capture a signal on a surface you control and carry it into surfaces you do not control.

That is the whole trick. Capture a flag where you own the URL, use it where you do not.

The recipe

Here is how you set it up for the QA case.

Step 1. In Adobe Target, go to Audiences and create a Profile Script. Something to the effect of:

if (page.url.indexOf('qa=true') > -1) {
    return 'true';
} else if (page.url.indexOf('qa=false') > -1) {
    return 'false';
}

This gets evaluated on every mbox call. When it sees your flag in the URL, it writes the value to the profile.

Step 2. Go to any client-side page where you can modify the URL and where Target is already in place. Append
qa=true
. The script fires, and because the resulting profile attribute is tied to your PCID and ECID, it is now attached to you as a visitor. It is no longer dependent on the URL that set it.

Step 3. Build a sister activity targeted to that profile attribute and its value. Your server-side activity now has something to qualify against, and it did not need to know anything about your URL. When you are done, hit any client-side page again with
qa=false
and you flip yourself back out.

Three steps, no engineering ticket, and you are QA-ing a server-side experience through a client-side door.

What happens on the call, in order

It helps to know exactly when the profile gets touched, because the timing is what makes this work.

When a delivery call hits Adobe Target, the first thing it does is resolve identity and load your profile from the profile store. Before it evaluates a single audience or picks a single experience, it runs your profile scripts. They look at the request and the existing profile, and they either set a value or leave it alone. My qa script is a good example. If it sees qa=true it writes true, if it sees qa=false it writes false, and if it sees neither it returns nothing and the value already on the profile stays exactly as it was. That last part is the quiet reason the flag is sticky. Nothing overwrites it until you tell it to.

Only after the profile scripts have run does Target evaluate audiences. This is the ordering that matters. The audience on your sister activity reads a profile attribute that was set moments earlier in the same request, so the qualification just works. Target then applies activity priority and traffic allocation, and if you already have an assignment it reuses it rather than rolling the dice again.

Then comes the part people miss. When Target assigns you to an experience, that assignment is written back to the profile. Your activity membership and your experience are themselves profile attributes. It is why you keep seeing the same experience on every subsequent call, and it is why you can target one activity based on whether someone is already in another. The profile is not just where you drop your own flags. It is where Target records its own decisions too.

So by the time any content comes back, the profile has been read, your scripts have set or ignored their values, audiences have been evaluated against those values, an experience has been chosen, and that choice has been saved. The offer is the last thing to happen, not the first. Once you can see that sequence, the QA trick stops looking like a hack and starts looking like the system working exactly as designed.

Where else this shows up

The QA use case is the one that started the conversation, but it is a single instance of a general pattern. Anytime you have a visitor-level signal you want to set once and honor everywhere, this works.

Server-side and delivery API activities are the headline, because that is the surface that leaves people stuck. But the same move covers any headless or parameter-less context. Email personalization. In-app experiences. Kiosk and connected device surfaces. Anywhere the visitor identity resolves but the URL is not something you can lean on.

A few others worth having in your back pocket:

Internal traffic exclusion. Flag your QA team and employees once, then exclude that profile value across every activity you run until you decide to clear it. No more chasing internal traffic activity by activity.

Stakeholder demos. Force yourself or a stakeholder into a specific variant so you can walk through it live, without building audience gymnastics to get there.

Beta and allowlist cohorts. Tag a group of users and keep them qualified across a whole set of activities, not just the one where they first showed up.

Sticky qualification. If you are running a multi step journey and you want someone who qualified on a landing page to stay eligible downstream, capture the qualification on entry and target the attribute the rest of the way through.

Where it breaks, and why you should care

The entire technique rests on identity resolution. The profile attribute travels with the visitor because the client-side session and the server-side call resolve to the same profile. If your server-side implementation is minting a brand new profile on each request instead of passing the tntId or ECID from the client session, the attribute is not there, and none of this works. That is the first thing to check if you try this and come up empty. It is almost always an identity plumbing issue, not a Target issue.

Two more things to keep in mind.

Persistence cuts both ways. The flag sticks for the lifetime of the profile, which is exactly what makes the technique work, and also exactly why you want the
qa=false
exit built in from the start. Do not leave stale QA flags floating around in profiles, or you will spend an afternoon wondering why someone is seeing an experience they should not.

And profile scripts run on every mbox call, so they are not free. This is a use deliberately, mind your script count situation. It is a precise tool for a specific job, not something to sprinkle across your account.

The takeaway

The reason I like this one is that it changes how you think about profile scripts, not just how you QA. Once you treat them as a way to capture a signal and pin it to a visitor, you stop being limited by which surface can read a URL. You capture where it is easy and you use it where it counts. The QA fix is just the first thing you will build with it.

A question came up in a practitioner channel this week that a lot of people quietly struggle with, so I want to walk through the fix and then the bigger idea sitting underneath it.
